Markham was happy to recieve his letter. He is glad that Cahill has acquinted himself with Emerson, Ruskin, Carlyle, Kipling and Shakespeare and others. He thinks Cahill for his kind reference to his poetical work, and he is devote to two poems right now.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
